The University of Idaho, also known as UI or U of I, is a land-grant public research university in Moscow, which is the largest city and the county seat of Latah County, in the US State of Idaho. The origin of the city was disputed over the years, by specialists, but there is no proof that it was named after a Russian or a Russian city. It got its name in 1875, when the business district was established and the town was a significant center of commerce in the region.
UI was founded in 1889, on January 30, by the territorial legislature of Idaho, and it 1st opened its door in 1892, on October 3, with a class of only 40 students. Since its founding, the university grew, having today a total an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 11 000 students, offering 142 degree programs, including bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, through 10 different colleges.
UI’s campus is considered to be one of the most scenic campuses in western USA, the nearby surroundings consisting of rolling hills, rivers, lakes and mountains, which offer a large variety of recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
The campus spreads on nearly 1600 acres of beautiful, green land, and it was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, in 1908, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, who also helped design several other major college campuses in the West, as well as the Central Park in New York City and the USA Capitol grounds.
The athletic teams from UI are known as the Idaho Vandals, who participate in the NCAA’s Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly I-A) in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). In addition to football, for which sport the Vandals are best known, UI also has sports programs in basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, and several other sports.
